Lighthouse Road Trip

Iroise Lighthouses & Panoramas Road Trip: A Spectacular Itinerary in North Finistère

Brittany is nicknamed the land of lighthouses because it is home to more of them than anywhere else in Europe. The Pays d'Iroise , in the far west of northern Finistère , boasts some of the most spectacular maritime panoramas in France. From Portsall , the view opens onto a horizon punctuated by emblematic silhouettes: the Île Vierge lighthouse (the tallest in Europe), the Four lighthouse , and, on a clear day, the lighthouses of the Molène and Ouessant archipelagos.

Staying at the Gîte des Dunes de Tréompan in Ploudalmézeau means having a front row seat to explore these lighthouses and admire the most beautiful views of the coastline. Here is a one-day road trip around the lighthouses and panoramas of Iroise, accessible directly from your accommodation.

Stage 1: Portsall and the coast of Ploudalmézeau – the horizon begins at the Gîte des Dunes de Tréompan

Even before setting off, you only have to cross the threshold of the Gîte des Dunes de Tréompan to feel the call of the open sea. Tréompan beach , a vast expanse of sand bordered by dunes, offers an almost wild atmosphere at sunrise. Following the GR34 customs officers' path , you will already discover a succession of coves, rocky points and spectacular views of the Iroise Sea, with the ballet of lighthouses that mark the coast as a backdrop.

It's the perfect warm-up before heading out to explore the region's most famous lighthouses.

Step 2: Pointe de Corsen – the end of the continent

About fifteen minutes' drive away, Pointe de Corsen marks the westernmost point of mainland France. Here, the ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, and the feeling of being "at the end of the world" takes on its full meaning.

An observatory allows you to contemplate the horizon and admire the powerful currents of the Iroise. On a clear day, you can clearly see the lighthouses of Ouessant and Molène, unchanging watchmen facing the Atlantic.

Step 3: The Saint-Mathieu lighthouse – between history and panorama

Continuing south, don't miss the spectacular Saint-Mathieu lighthouse , standing next to the ruins of a medieval abbey. The whole thing, perched atop a cliff, offers one of Brittany's most iconic sites.

You can climb to the top of the lighthouse (163 steps) and enjoy breathtaking views of the entire Iroise Sea, the Crozon Peninsula, and the Ponant Islands. At its feet, the ruined abbey adds a unique atmosphere, blending heritage and maritime landscapes.

Stage 4: Le Conquet and Pointe de Kermorvan

A few kilometers away, the charming port of Le Conquet is worth a stop to stroll along the quays and enjoy a seafood platter. But the main attraction is located at the exit of the village: the Pointe de Kermorvan .

Accessible on foot from a small car park, this promontory offers an exceptional circular view of the Molène archipelago, the island of Béniguet and the entrance to the Four channel. At the very end, the Kermorvan lighthouse , surrounded by granite and gorse, stands proudly facing the winds.

It is one of the most photogenic panoramas in the Pays d'Iroise, particularly at sunset.

Stage 5: Pointe de Pen-Hir and the Tas de Pois (extended option)

If you have a little more time and want to extend the adventure, cross the Plougastel bridge to reach the Crozon peninsula (about 1 hour's drive from Le Conquet). The Pointe de Pen-Hir reveals its impressive cliffs plunging into the ocean, and the famous Tas de Pois , rocks rising offshore, make up one of the most famous panoramas in Brittany.

Even if this detour lengthens the day, it remains an unforgettable experience for lovers of the great outdoors.
